CADILLAC — Last weekend, Rover left Northern Michigan for the hustle and bustle of Detroit for two nights of concerts at Ford Field.

Let’s just say after 42 years together, the headliner of the concert, which in case you didn’t know was Metallica, is as good as ever. While not all the opening acts were Rover’s cup of tea, one in particular was — Pantera. Rover isn’t going to get into a debate about whether it was or wasn’t the band, because at face value it is a moot point.

They, however, were the highlight of Friday’s show and one I was glad to see. Metallica was great too, but Sunday was the night I felt they shined the brightest. The “No Repeat Weekend” shows in Detroit were the end of their 2023 world tour and whatever energy they had left, they poured out.

There were even rumblings that Bob Seger was going to join them on stage when they played a cover of his hit song, “Turn the Page,” but Seger was not there and the song wasn’t played. An internet pipe dream, but one that had people buzzing about the possibility.

As for the host city, the D, it also shone bright and not just because of the sunny days. There was an energy you could feel in the city. Maybe it was the Lions, maybe it was the 70,000-plus people there for the show or maybe it was those things and more, but the city was the perfect backdrop for the weekend that ended the world tour.

That’s not to say the city isn’t without problems, but everyone was happy to be there and it showed.

So, with a work week back under the belt, Rover moves on to readers’ questions, and this week, we have a lone question about Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell.

Remember, if you have a question and you would like the newshound to sniff out an answer, email it to news@cadillacnews.com, submit it via the Cadillac News website or call (231) 775-6564. There also is an Ask Rover Facebook page that is getting rolled out where previous Ask Rover questions and answers are posted. You can submit questions there as well.

Q: When is something going to be done about the weed problem in Cadillac and Mitchell lakes?

A: Rover reached out to Dr. Jennifer L. Jermalowicz-Jones, who is a professional limnologist and certified professional watershed manager for Restorative Lake Sciences, which is the company contracted to treat each lake for its nuisance and invasive plants.

She told Rover the 2023 aquatic vegetation management season was a success on both Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac. Lake Mitchell had an 184-acre Eurasian watermilfoil treatment with sustained control in Big Cove due to previous aggressive treatments there.

She also said Eurasian watermilfoil has been successfully managed in Lake Mitchell over the past decade, but an overactive seed bank in 2023 produced growth that required a larger-scale treatment.

As for Cadillac’s other lake, she said in 2023 Lake Cadillac had an Eurasian watermilfoil treatment of 49.5 acres, which was down significantly since 2022, when 161 acres required treatment. She concluded by saying both lakes differ in their water chemistry, aquatic vegetation communities and landscape as well as sedimentary seed banks.
