Tage Thompson is returning to the Sabres’ lineup well ahead of initial projections. The first-line center has been cleared to play in Buffalo's home game Tuesday night against the Detroit Red Wings. Thompson led the team in scoring the past two seasons. He has missed nine games with an upper-body injury after blocking a shot with his left arm last month. Thompson was originally projected to miss four to six weeks.

Jake Walman scored 54 seconds into overtime, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 for their fifth win in six games. Walman, Alex DeBrincat and Daniel Sprong each had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which blew a 3-0 lead in regulation. Joe Veleno and Christian Fischer also scored, and Ville Husso made 26 saves. Walman converted a slap shot from the left circle. It was his fifth goal of the season. Justin Barron, Joel Armia, Nick Suzuki, Gustav Lindstrom scored for Montreal, which lost for the third time in four games. Jake Allen made 28 stops.

Jimmy Vesey scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period, and the New York Rangers rallied to beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2. K’Andre Miller had a goal and an assist, Artemi Panarin also scored and Alexis Lafrenière had two assists for the Rangers, who scored twice in the third period to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time this season. Igor Shesterkin finished with 26 saves. Robby Fabbri had a goal and an assist, Moritz Seider also scored and Andrew Copp had two assists for Detroit, which had won three straight. Robby Fabbri, Dylan Larkin and David Perron also scored for the Red Wings, who are the only team to beat Boston in regulation. Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists and Ville Husso stopped 25 shots. Jake DeBrusk and Danton Heinen scored for the Bruins, who had been 5-0-2 since losing at Detroit on Nov. 4. Jeremy Swayman made 24 saves on his 25th birthday.

Tim Stützle scored with two seconds left in overtime as the Ottawa Senators beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in the opening game of the NHL’s Global Series in Sweden. Stützle batted the puck out of the air off a crossing pass from Drake Batherson that hit the stick of Detroit defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and beat goalie James Reimer just before the horn sounded as Ottawa earned the victory after squandering a four-goal lead. Brady Tkachuk had two goals — both set up by Stützle — and Josh Norris added a goal and an assist for Ottawa. Jake Sanderson also scored. Joonas Korpisalo made 37 saves. Gostisbehere had a goal and an assist, and Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond and David Perron added goals for Detroit. Reimer stopped 29 shots.

Alex DeBrincat and Daniel Sprong scored a little more than two minutes apart late in the second period to give Detroit the lead and the Red Wings beat Columbus 5-4 Saturday, handing the Blue Jackets their fourth straight loss. Compher had goals for the Red Wings, who have lost six of eight (2-4-2) overall and four of their last five (1-3-1) at home. James Reimer finished with 23 saves. In the extra period, Caufield zipped a high wrist shot over Reimer’s left shoulder for his fifth goal of the season. It was Reimer’s holding penalty that had put Montreal on the power play.
