Three people are dead and a fourth in critical but stable condition after a gunman opened fire at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before police killed him in a shootout. Wednesday's attack had terrified students and professors cowering in classrooms. A law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation tells The Associated Press that the shooter was a professor who'd unsuccessfully sought a job at the school. The campus is only a couple of miles from the Las Vegas Strip, where the worst mass shooting in U.S. history took place in October 2017. Police say lessons learned from that tragedy helped them confront Wednesday's attack.

Elijah Hawkins scored 12 points with 11 assists and Minnesota overcame a 15-point halftime deficit and the loss of leading scorer Dawson Garcia to beat Nebraska 76-65. Garcia turned an ankle a couple minutes into the game. He returned late in the half and started the second half, but was favoring his ankle and soon took a seat with Minnesota trailing by 11. The Gophers rallied without Garcia behind a couple of big runs. Ola-Joseph scored 15 points, Braeden Carrington 13 and Mike Mitchell Jr. and Pharrel Payne had 12 apiece for Minnesota, which outscored Nebraska 52-26 in the second half. Brice Williams scored 18 points but only one in the second half to lead the Cornhuskers.

A law enforcement official says the gunman who killed three people and critically wounded a fourth in an attack at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas was a professor who unsuccessfully sought a job at the school. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information publicly. Students and professors barricaded themselves in classrooms after shots rang out shortly before noon Wednesday. Authorities say the gunman went from floor to floor in a building that houses the business school and was killed in a shootout with police outside. There’s no immediate word on a motive for the attack.

The Detroit Red Wings say Patrick Kane is ready to make his season debut. Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde says he expects the newly signed veteran to play Thursday night at home against the San Jose Sharks. The 35-year-old Kane had his right hip surgically repaired six months ago, hoping to become the third NHL player to come back from the invasive procedure. Detroit signed the playmaking wing last week to a prorated $2.75 million contract for the rest of the season to bolster its chances of earning a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
