Top-seeded Michigan will face Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinal to be played as the 110th edition of the Rose Bowl Game. When the lineup for the final four-team playoff was announced, the unbeaten Wolverines ended up booking another bowl appearance in the Southern California sun against the Crimson Tide. Jim Harbaugh’s team will make a long-anticipated return to Pasadena, its home for so many New Year’s Days in the past. The Wolverines will be playing in their 21st Rose Bowl, more than any school except USC, but Michigan hasn’t been to the Granddaddy of Them All since 2007.

No. 18 Iowa won the Big Ten West by mucking things up for everyone else. The Hawkeyes’ strategy failed them Saturday. While the defense did its part by holding one of the nation’s best offenses to two touchdowns and four field goals, their offensive struggles resurfaced in a 26-0 loss to No. 2 Michigan — their second conference title-game loss to the Wolverines in three years.

A University of Michigan graduate is suing the state over the loss of his revered “G0BLUE” car license plate. Joseph Hardig III says the plate has been on family vehicles for years. But he was told it was assigned to another car owner when he recently tried to renew it at a Secretary of State office. The state won't comment on the dispute. Hardig says he and his family are “huge” fans of the university. He is asking a judge to block the state from giving the plate to another Michigan graduate.

Charlie Munger, who helped Warren Buffett build Berkshire Hathaway into an investment powerhouse, has died. He was 99. Munger’s death was confirmed in a statement from the company, which said he died Tuesday at a California hospital. Munger served as Buffett’s sounding board on investments and business decisions and helped lead Berkshire for more than five decades and served as its longtime vice chairman. Munger preferred to stay in the background and let Buffett be the face of Berkshire, and he often downplayed his contributions to the company’s remarkable success. But Buffett always credited Munger with pushing him beyond his early value investing strategies to buy great businesses. Berkshire's devoted shareholders treasure Munger's pointed quips at the annual meeting.

Toledo will have a lot on its plate a day after Thanksgiving. The Rockets, who are ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2015, can keep themselves in the conversation for a coveted spot in the New Year's Day bowl lineup with a win at Central Michigan. No. 23 Toledo has won 10 straight since losing at Illinois in the season opener on a last-second field goal. The Rockets have already clinched the MAC West title and will face Miami for the conference title next week. First, though, they'll have to handle the Chippewas, who can become bowl eligible with an upset.

No. 11 Penn State has plenty to play for when it faces injury-riddled Michigan State on Friday in the regular-season finale at Ford Field in Detroit. The Nittany Lions (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) cannot afford a loss, needing a win to solidify their chances for a New Year's Six bowl game. A Penn State loss to Michigan State (4-7, 2-6) would likely knock the Nittany Lions out of contention for a bid to the Peach, Fiesta or Cotton bowls. The game could be Harlon Barnett's last as Michigan State's head coach. Barnett was named interim coach on Sept. 10, when the school suspended, and later fired, Mel Tucker.

The S&P 500 fell 0.2% Tuesday for its third loss in the last 17 days. The Dow dipped 62 points, and the Nasdaq composite dropped 0.6%. Lowe's and Best Buy both sank despite reporting stronger profit for the latest quarter than expected. Each cited challenges ahead and cut their forecasts for results over the full year.

Inflation has reached its lowest point in 2 1/2 years. The unemployment rate has stayed below 4% for the longest stretch since the 1960s. And the U.S. economy has repeatedly defied predictions of a coming recession. Yet according to a raft of polls and surveys, most Americans hold a glum view of the economy. The disparity has led to befuddlement, exasperation and curiosity on social media and in opinion columns. Many factors lie behind the disconnect, but economists increasingly point to one in particular: The lingering financial and psychological effects of the worst bout of inflation in four decades.

Experts on extremism fear that the threat of politically motivated violence will intensify as the 2024 presidential campaign heats up. Conspiracy theories that demonized Donald Trump’s enemies are morphing and spreading as the front-runner for the Republican nomination aims for a return to the White House. The potential for danger was highlighted by last year's attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband in their San Francisco home. David DePape, who was convicted this past week of bludgeoning Paul Pelosi with a hammer, had testified that he consumed a steady diet of right-wing conspiracy theories before the attack. The assault took place less than two weeks before the 2022 midterm elections.

Limited phone and internet services began working again Friday across Gaza after fuel was delivered to restart generators that power the networks. Both communications and fuel are key for aid organizations for delivering supplies to Palestinians in Gaza, many of whom don’t have access to adequate food or water. Israel announced that it will allow two tanker trucks of fuel into Gaza each day for the United Nations and communication systems. That amount is half of what the U.N. said it needs for lifesaving functions for hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza, including aid delivery and hospitals.

Michigan has announced that football coach Jim Harbaugh will serve the remainder of a three-game suspension from the Big Ten in return for the conference ending its investigation into a yearslong scheme to steal opponents' play-calling signals. Harbaugh was suspended just weeks after an investigation into the allegations by the NCAA surfaced.

Climate scientists have long said that eating more plants and fewer animals is among the simplest, cheapest and most readily available ways for people to reduce their impact on the environment. And an explosion of new types of plant-based “meat” made from made from soybeans and other plants has emerged as a possible solution. But even though the products have come a long way from the dry veggie patties of the past, they haven't converted enough meat lovers to make enough of an impact. New techniques are in development, however, with hopes of satisfying our enduring craving for flesh with plants.

Saturday's game between border rivals Michigan State and Indiana may seem meaningless since both teams will not be bowl eligible. That's not how these teams see it, though. The Hoosiers are trying to build on the momentum of stringing together their three best games of the season. The Spartans, meanwhile, are trying to finish this unexpectedly challenging season with their first road win of the year. And the winner heads home with the rivalry's prized trophy — the Old Brass Spittoon.
