A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that free agent right-hander Kenta Maeda and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a $24 million, two-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a successful physical and had not been announced. Maeda, who turns 36 on April 11, spent the past three years with the Minnesota Twins. He was 6-8 with a 4.23 ERA in 20 starts and one relief appearance this year in his return from Tommy John surgery on Sept. 1, 2021.

Longtime Chicago White Sox announcer Jason Benetti is moving to Detroit where he will become the TV play-by-play voice of the Tigers. Detroit announced Benetti's hiring Thursday. Benetti had been part of the White Sox booth since 2016 and took over as lead announcer when Ken “Hawk” Harrelson retired in 2019. Benetti said on social media he was excited about the new opportunity and looks forward to bringing the rising Detroit franchise's games to Tigers fans worldwide. He told White Sox fans in another post that he loved them dearly.

Mark Canha’s $11.5 million option for 2024 was exercised by the Detroit Tigers, two days after the outfielder was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league pitcher Blake Holub. Milwaukee could have paid a $2 million buyout and allowed Canha to become a free agent. Tigers shortstop Javier Báez declined to exercise an opt out, keeping four years remaining on his contract with $98 million in guaranteed salary. Detroit also exercised a $3.5 million option on catcher Carson Kelly, who signed on Aug. 19, four days after he was released by Arizona.
