MCBAIN — The Rich Bennett era at Northern Michigan Christian is off to a solid start.

The Comets opened the boys basketball season with a 74-34 win over Midland Calvary Baptist in a non-conference contest Thursday.

NMC got some solid play out of its seniors and the newcomers played a role, too, Bennett said.

“This was a good first game,” he said. “We started out with a few jitters but settled down in the second quarter.

“We had great leadership from Ethan Bennett and Titus Johns on the floor and got great minutes, too, from freshman Eli Bowden. We were missing Gideon Currell due to injury but we were able to get the rest of the team on the floor for great court experience.”

Ethan Bennett paced the Comets with 24 points, eight rebounds and four blocks while Johns had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Colton Winkle had 14 points, five rebounds, a steal and a block while Bowden added 12 points, seven rebounds and a steal.

NMC shot 57 percent from the field as a team.

The Comets are at Muskegon Western Michigan Christian on Tuesday.
